Abstract: We will discuss how the translation lengths of pseudo-Anosov elements of the mapping class groups on either Teichmuller space or curve graph can help understanding subgroups of the mapping class groups. We will keep the talk as informal as possible, and try to discuss some open problems in this direction. The results which will be mentioned in the talk are based on joint works with various subgroups of the following group of people {Eiko Kin, Ahmad Rafiqi, Hyunshik Shin, Chenxi Wu}.
