Abstract: Two tilings are said to be mutually locally derivable (MLD) if each can be obtained from the other using local rules. From many perspective, two MLD tilings can be thought of as "the same." However, local derivability greatly impacts the adjacency relationship between tiles, which leads to the potential for adventure. Put on your explorer hats, in this talk we present results on eigenfunctions of the discrete Laplace operator and on playing the Game of Life on different manifestations of the Penrose tiling.
