What set theory could not be

Abstract: I am going to argue that set theory – playing its foundational role – is not particularly concerned with sets. Despite appearances, I don't think this is a frivolous claim. Among other things, even if the conclusion is doubted, it reveals an important split in attitudes researchers have toward set theory.
