Math Colloquium: What is... an Ekedahl-Oort Stratification? (series unlisted)
Abstract: The word 'stratification' means an arrangement or classification of something into different groups. The objects that I am interested in classifying are unitary Shimura varieties, which are moduli spaces of abelian varieties with extra structure that is too technical to define in an abstract. There are two types of stratifications that are of interest to arithmetic geometers: the Newton stratification, where we arrange by isogeny classes of p-divisible groups, and the Ekedahl-Oort stratification, where we arrange by isogeny classes of p-torsion groups. The goals of this talk are to build-up to a definition and understanding of the latter and to discuss questions that we can ask about this stratification. There are many words in this abstract that you may not have seen before so I will start from the basics and include examples throughout the talk.
