It is inspired by the "What is...? " column in the *Notices of the AMS. We loved reading those short non-technical articles when we were students, and the idea is simply to turn them into talks.
Each talk is built around a single mathematical object X, and tries to answer three questions:
1. What is X?
2. Why do mathematicians care about X?
3. What do we know, and what do we not know, about X?
We have undergraduate, master's and PhD students in mind, along with anyone curious about a field they do not work in — something like a general mathematics colloquium. The talks are in English, online, and open to everyone.
