 >The Quantum Computer - A Miracle or Mirage?</a>\nby Professor Gil Kalai (
Hebrew University of Jerusalem) as part of ITB Mathematics Distinguished L
ecture Series\n\n\nAbstract\nA quantum computer is a new type of computer
based on quantum physics. \nWhen it comes to certain computational objecti
ves\, the computational ability of \nquantum computers is tens\, and even
hundreds of orders of magnitude \nfaster than that of the familiar digital
computers\, and their construction will enable \nus to factor large integ
ers and to break most of the current cryptosystems. \n\nThe question of wh
ether the quantum computer is\na miracle or a mirage is\, to this day\, on
e of the fascinating clear-cut\nopen scientific questions of our time. \n\
nIn my lecture I will explain the question and the discoveries from \nthe
1990s that suggested that quantum computers could perform \nmiracles. Next
\, I will present my theory as to why \nthe quantum computer is a mirage\,
and describe some consequences \nfor noisy quantum systems in a world dev
 oid of quantum computation.\n
