 stract\nWhen I began working on the Governance Archaeology database this s
 ummer\, it was already a copious and insightful repository of historical c
 ommunities that had effectively designed and implemented collective govern
 ance mechanisms and institutions. The focus\, moving ahead\, was to add mo
 re Eastern and tribal communities to enhance the geographic scope of the w
 ork. Furthermore\, a suggestion at a Stanford conference sparked the idea 
 of adding heterogeneity to the database. This aspect was fascinating from 
 a CGI perspective because several communities had such a rich array of soc
 ial\, economic and ethnic groups\, often with conflicting interests\, and 
 yet they functioned productively. The challenge here was to capture as muc
 h of the complexity of heterogeneity and its impact on institutions while 
 using as few tags as possible to keep the procedure of coding for this sim
 ple. Eventually\, in addition to the types of heterogeneity\, the kind of 
 inclusion of disparate groups and power imbalances were added to the field
 \, which I'll be explaining in more detail in the presentation.\n
