Abstract: A smooth Fano manifold admits a Kahler-Einstein metric if and only if it is K-polystable (K-stable if the automorphism group is finite). In this talk, I will explain how to prove and disprove K-polystability and K-stability using basic tools of birational geometry. The talk will will be focused on smooth Fano threefolds. This is a joint group project with Carolina Araujo, Ana-Maria Castravet, Kento Fujita, Anne-Sophie Kaloghiros, Jesus Martinez-Garcia, Constantin Shramov, Hendrick S\"u\ss, and Nivedita Viswanathan.
