DESCRIPTION:Title: Sets
inducing large additive doubling\nby Dmitrii Zhelezov (Rényi Institu
te) as part of Webinar in Additive Combinatorics\n\n\nAbstract\nRephrasing
the celebrated Freiman lemma in additive combinatorics\, one can show tha
t a finite set in Z^d containing a K-dimensional simplex has additive doub
ling at least ~K. We will discuss a novel framework for studying how such
induced doubling can be inherited from a more general class of multi-dimen
sional subsets. It turns out that subsets of so-called quasi-cubes induce
large doubling no matter the dimension of the ambient set. Time permitting
\, we will discuss how it allows to deduce a structural theorem for sets w
ith polynomially large additive doubling and an application to the ”few
products\, many sums” problem of Bourgain and Chang.\nThis is joint work
with I.Ruzsa\, D. Matlosci\, G. Shakan and D. Palvölgyi\n

DESCRIPTION:Title: Diag
onal Ramsey via effective quasirandomness\nby Ashwin Sah (MIT) as part
of Webinar in Additive Combinatorics\n\n\nAbstract\nWe improve the upper
bound for diagonal Ramsey numbers to\n\\[\nR(k+1\,k+1)\\le\\exp(-c(\\log k
)^2)\\binom{2k}{k}\n\\]\nfor $k\\ge 3$. To do so\, we build on a quasirand
omness and induction framework for Ramsey numbers introduced by Thomason a
nd extended by Conlon\, demonstrating optimal ``effective quasirandomness'
' results about convergence of graphs. This optimality represents a natura
l barrier to improvement.\n

DESCRIPTION:Title: Sums
and products along edges of sparse graphs\nby Jozsef Solymosi (UBC) a
s part of Webinar in Additive Combinatorics\n\n\nAbstract\nIn their semina
l paper Erdős and Szemerédi formulated conjectures on the size of sum se
t and product set of integers. The strongest form of their conjecture is a
bout sums and products along the edges of a graph\, when we consider sums
and products of some pairs only. With Noga Alon and Imre Ruzsa we showed t
hat this strong form of the Erdős-Szemerédi conjecture does not hold. In
this talk I will list some related problems and recent results.\n

DESCRIPTION:Title: Galo
is groups of polynomials of large degree\nby Dimitris Koukoulopoulos (
Montreal) as part of Webinar in Additive Combinatorics\n\n\nAbstract\nAbst
ract: Let $\\mathcal{N}$ be a set of natural numbers and let us consider a
ll monic polynomials of degree $n$ whose coefficients are in $\\mathcal{N}
$. What are the odds that a polynomial chosen uniformly at random from thi
s set is irreducible? Moreover\, what can we say about the distribution of
its Galois group? I will present some recent results\, joint with Lior Ba
ry-Soroker and Gady Kozma\, that show that if $\\mathcal{N}$ is not too sp
arse\, then such random polynomials are highly likely to be irreducible an
d have very large Galois group. The proofs uses a fun mixture of ideas fro
m sieve methods\, the arithmetic of polynomials over finite fields\, prime
s with restricted digits\, Galois theory and group theory.\n

DESCRIPTION:Title: A ra
ndom analogue of Gilbreath's conjecture\nby Zachary Chase (Oxford) as
part of Webinar in Additive Combinatorics\n\n\nAbstract\nGiven a sequence
a1\, a2\, ... of integers\, one can form the sequence |a1-a2|\, |a2-a3|\,
.... Gilbreath's conjecture is that if you start with the sequence of the
primes and iterate this consecutive differencing procedure\, then the firs
t term of every sequence (besides the initial one) is a 1. We prove the co
nclusion of Gilbreath's conjecture for a suitably random initial sequence
instead of the primes.\n

which are somewhat associative in the sense that x * (y * z) = (x * y) * z
for 1 percent (say) of all triples (x\,y\,z). They presented an example o

DESCRIPTION:Title: Erg
odic properties of the Liouville function and applications\nby Nikos F
rantzikinakis (Crete) as part of Webinar in Additive Combinatorics\n\n\nAb
stract\nThe Liouville function is a multiplicative function that encodes i
mportant information related to distributional properties of the prime num
bers. A conjecture of Chowla states that the values of the Liouville funct
ion fluctuate between plus and minus in such a random way\, that all sign
patterns of a given length appear with the same frequency. The Chowla conj
ecture remains largely open and in this talk we will see how ergodic theor
y combined with some feedback from number theory allows us to establish tw
o variants of this conjecture. Key to our approach is an in-depth study of
measure preserving systems that are naturally associated with the Liouvil
le function. The talk is based on joint work with Bernard Host.\n

DESCRIPTION:Title: Pro
duct sets of arithmetic progressions\nby Max Wenqiang Xu (Stanford) as
part of Webinar in Additive Combinatorics\n\n\nAbstract\nWe prove that th
e size of the product set of any finite arithmetic progression A in intege
rs of size N is at least N^{2}/(log N)^{c+o(1)}\, where c=1-(1+loglog 2)/(
log 2). This matches the bound in the celebrated Erdos multiplication tab
le problem\, up to a factor of (log N)^{o(1)} and thus confirms a conjectu
re of Elekes and Ruzsa.\nIf instead A is relaxed to be a subset of a finit
e arithmetic progression in integers with positive constant density\, we p
rove that the size of the product set is at least N^{2}/(log N)^{2log2-1 +
o(1)}. This solves the typical case of another conjecture of Elekes and R
uzsa on the size of the product set of a set A whose sum set is of size O
(|A|).This is joint work with Yunkun Zhou.\n
