chigan) as part of Quasiworld Seminar\n\n\nAbstract\nA major goal in compl
ex dynamics is to understand dynamical moduli spaces\; that is\, conjugacy
classes of holomorphic dynamical systems. One of the great successes in t
his regard is the study of the moduli space of quadratic polynomials\; it
is isomorphic to the complex plane. This moduli space contains the famous
Mandelbrot set\, which has been extensively studied over the past 40 years
. Understanding other dynamical moduli spaces to the same extent tends to
be more challenging as they are often higher-dimensional. In this talk\, w
e consider the moduli space of quadratic rational maps\, which is isomorph
ic to C^2. We will focus on special algebraic curves\, called "Milnor curv
es" in this space. In general\, it is unknown if Milnor curves are irreduc
ible over C. Because these curves are smooth\, this is equivalent to askin
g whether they are connected. We will exhibit the first infinite collectio
n of Milnor curves that are connected. This is joint work with X. Buff and
  A. Epstein.\n

DESCRIPTION:Title: <a href="https://researchseminars.org/talk/Quasiworld/7
/">Inverse limits of expanding Thurston maps and pseudo-Anosov homeomorphi
sms of the 3-sphere</a>\nby André Salles de Carvalho (University of São
Paolo) as part of Quasiworld Seminar\n\n\nAbstract\nThe inverse limit and
natural extension constructions extend a non-invertible dynamical system "
naturally" to an invertible one. Inverse limits were probably first used i
n dynamics by Bob Williams\, in the late 1960's\, in his study of expandin
g 1-dimensional attractors. Since then\, several researchers have studied
inverse limits in dynamics. In complex dynamics\, and rational maps in par
ticular\, this started to be done systematically in the 1990's\, with Denn
is Sullivan's work on renormalization and with the work of Meiyu Su and Mi
nsky-Lyubich on Riemann surface laminations associated to rational maps. \
n\nIn this talk we discuss inverse limits of expanding Thurston maps with
a certain symmetry. Typical examples are real rational maps (i.e.\, holomo
rphic maps that can be written with real coefficients). Inverse limit spac
es are almost always very complicated topological spaces. We show how a mi
ld collapse on the inverse limit spaces under consideration yields the 3-s
phere and the natural extension then becomes a "nice" 3-sphere homeomorphi
sm. More precisely\, the statement we discuss is that\, starting from our
expanding Thurston map of the 2-sphere\, there is a mild collapse which tu
rns its inverse limit space into the 3-sphere and its natural extension in
to a "pseudo-Anosov" homeomorphism. This means that on the 3-sphere there
are two singular invariant foliations\; these foliations are transverse to
each other\, are transversely measured and the holonomies preserve these
measures\; the homeomorphism preserves the foliations and contracts one an
d expands the other transverse measure.\n\nThis talk is closely related to
the talk "Inverse limits of tent maps and sphere homeomorphisms" given by
Toby Hall on June 9th. There generalized pseudo-Anosov maps of the 2-sphe
re were constructed from inverse limits of interval endomorphisms. Thus ou
r construction can be viewed as a higher dimensional analog. \n\nThis is j
oint work (in progress) with Daniel Meyer.\n

0/">Weyl groups in Cantor dynamics</a>\nby Olga Lukina (University of Leid
en) as part of Quasiworld Seminar\n\n\nAbstract\nArboreal representations
of absolute Galois groups of number fields are given by profinite groups o
f automorphisms of regular rooted trees\, with the geometry of the tree de
termined by a polynomial which defines such a representation. Thus arborea
l representations give rise to dynamical systems on a Cantor set\, and all
ow to apply the methods of topological dynamics to study problems in numbe
r theory. In this talk we consider the conjecture of Boston and Jones\, wh
ich states that the images of Frobenius elements under arboreal representa
tions have a certain cycle structure. To study this conjecture\, we borrow
from the Lie group theory the concepts of maximal tori and Weyl groups\,
and introduce maximal tori and Weyl groups in the profinite setting. We th
en use this new technique to give a partial answer to the conjecture by Bo
ston and Jones in the case when an arboreal representations is defined by
a post-critically finite quadratic polynomial over a number field. Based o
n a joint work with Maria Isabel Cortez.\n

 1/">Elliptic integrals\, modular forms\, and the Weierstrass zeta-function
</a>\nby Mario Bonk (UCLA) as part of Quasiworld Seminar\n\n\nAbstract\nIn
my talk I will report on joint work with Wenbo Li and Zhiqiang Li. We stu
dy subsystems of expanding Thurston maps. Such a subsystem has an associat
ed invariant set Ω and we are interested in the case when Ω is homeomorp
hic to the standard Sierpiński carpet. We completely characterize the sit
uation when such a subsystem is topologically conjugate to a subsystem of
a postcritically-finite rational map. In particular\, this is true if and
only if Ω equipped with a visual metric can be embedded into the Riemann
sphere by a quasisymmetry. Our results can be seen as a dynamical analog o
f the Kapovich--Kleiner conjecture in geometric group theory.\n
