DESCRIPTION:Title: <a href="https://researchseminars.org/talk/voganish/5/"
 >Representations of SL(2) near the identity</a>\nby Monica Nevins (Univers
ity of Ottawa) as part of Canadian Rockies Representation Theory\n\nLectur
e held in Zoom and MS337.\n\nAbstract\nThe character of an admissible repr
 esentation $\\pi$ of a $p$-adic group $G$ can be expressed\, in a neighbou
rhood of the identity\, as a linear combination of functions arising from
the finitely many nilpotent orbits. In this talk\, we propose an interpret
ation of the local character expansion as branching rules of the restricti
on of $\\pi$ to a compact open subgroup and illustrate this explicitly wit
 h the example of $\\mathrm{SL}(2).$\n
