DESCRIPTION:Title: <a href="https://researchseminars.org/talk/radbio/5/">B
iological effects of radiation: from initial footprints to therapy and rad
iation protection applications</a>\nby Dr Giorgio Baiocco (University of P
avia) as part of RadBio Seminars\n\n\nAbstract\nThe Radiation Biophysics a
nd Radiobiology Laboratory of the University of Pavia is hosted in the “
 A. Volta” Physics Department\, Pavia\, Italy. Within national and Europe
an research projects\, we study the effects of ionizing radiation on biolo
gical structures. Our work includes experimental and theoretical approache
 s. Experimental measurements are routinely performed on in vitro and ex-vi
vo cell cultures and tissues. In parallel\, physics-based and mathematical
computational models are used to gain mechanistic insight into cell respo
nses to radiation. \nBesides studies on fundamental radiobiological mechan
isms elicited by varied radiation qualities or background environmental ra
diation\, different projects focus on applications to radiation therapy an
d its optimization\, as well as radiation protection\, in particular on lo
w-dose exposures and the space radiation environment.\nIn this seminar\, w
e will briefly review a selection of the more recent research accomplishme
nts of the Lab. This includes ongoing projects on the optimization of comb
ined chemo- and immuno-therapy treatments with radiotherapy\, studies of s
pace-radiation related health risks and risks of nuclear workers accidenta
lly exposed to peculiar radioactive products as micrometric metal particle
 s.\n
