DESCRIPTION:Title: How minimal hypersurface and MOTS singularities affect relativity theorem
s\nby Rick Schoen (University of California\, Irvine) as part of JoMaR
eC - Joint Online Mathematical Relativity Colloquium\n\n\nAbstract\nSome t
heorems in relativity work directly only in low dimensions because of the
possibility of singularities in area minimizing hypersurfaces and MOTS. Th
ese include both Riemannian and spacetime positive mass theorems as well a
s the Riemannian Penrose inequality. In some cases the singularities are r
elatively easy to work around and in others they present significant probl
ems to overcome. This will be a general lecture which will attempt to give
perspective and more clarity to this issue.\n
