 bstract\nThis is joint work with Botong Wang. I want to start by recalling
  the Hopf-Singer conjecture on the sign of the Euler characteristic of a c
 ompact aspherical manifold. In the K\\”ahler setting\, we have a stronge
 r conjecture involving Euler characteristics of perverse sheaves. Our resu
 lts are that the stronger conjecture holds when X is compact K\\”ahler w
 ith nonpositive curvature\, or X is aspherical projective   with a faithfu
 l rigid local system. I will sketch the proofs\, and describe with some il
 lustrative examples.\n
