DESCRIPTION:Title: <a href="https://researchseminars.org/talk/YMC/50/">On
electric-magnetic duality and related problems</a>\nby Karapet Mkrtchyan (
Imperial Collegel London) as part of Yerevan Mathematical Colloquium\n\n\n
Abstract\nElectric-magnetic duality is an intriguing symmetry underlying t
he basic mathematical model of the electromagnetic field theory - Maxwell
Equations. This symmetry has an interesting property: it does not admit si
mple (Lagrangian) formulations that manifest it. Furthermore\, it is seemi
ngly broken in the real world by the presence of matter that has only elec
tric charges. Thus\, both theoretical challenges and questionable practica
l usefulness of this symmetry do not encourage the development of new form
ulations that make use of it. However\, there are related theoretical mode
ls that require such formulations. We will discuss a new formulation of el
ectromagnetic field theory and its generalizations\, that combines the man
ifest electric-magnetic duality symmetry with manifest space-time symmetri
es.\n\ntalk host: Zhirayr Avetisyan (the language can be Armenian or Engli
sh\, depending on the choice of the audience)\n
