DESCRIPTION:Title: <a href="https://researchseminars.org/talk/UKYhepth/34/
">Quantum black holes on the lattice</a>\nby Toby Wiseman (Imperial Colleg
e\, London) as part of Theoretical Physics Seminars (Kentucky)\n\n\nAbstra
ct\nHolography apparently relates certain quantum field theories to quantu
m\ntheories of gravity. The original instance of this is Maldacena's\ndual
ity between maximally supersymmetric gauge theories and type II\nstring th
eory in the presence of D-branes. In the ’t Hooft limit\, and at\napprop
riate temperatures\, the dual to the gauge theory is described by\ncertain
black holes (or rather black p-branes). This allows the\nremarkable oppor
tunity to perform calculations of quantum black holes\nthrough the equival
ent gauge theory\, and to check the consistency of\nholographic duality. I
will discuss such calculations\, and the progress\nthat has been made ove
r the last decade in showing that the predicted\ngravity behaviour does in
deed emerge from thermal gauge theory.\n
