DESCRIPTION:Title: <a href="https://researchseminars.org/talk/UKVOAS/5/">C
untz semigroups</a>\nby Hannes Thiel (University of Münster) as part of U
K Virtual operator algebras seminar\n\n\nAbstract\nThe Cuntz semigroup is
a geometric refinement of K-theory that plays an important role in the str
ucture theory of C*-algebras. It is defined analogously to the Murray-von
Neumann semigroup by using equivalence classes of positive elements instea
d of projections. \nStarting with the definition of the Cuntz semigroup o
f a C*-algebra\, we will look at some of its classical applications. I wil
l then talk about the recent breakthroughs in the structure theory of Cunt
z semigroups and some of the consequences.\n\nAssumed Knowledge: Basic C*-
algebra theory\, including comparison theory for projections.\n
