DESCRIPTION:Title: <a href="https://researchseminars.org/talk/Tropicalmath
andML/39/">Cohomology classes in the transcriptome</a>\nby Kelly Maggs (Ma
x Planck Institute of Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics) as part of Trop
ical mathematics and machine learning\n\n\nAbstract\nSingle-cell sequencin
g data consists of a point cloud where the points are cells\, with coordin
ates RNA expression levels in each gene. Since the tissue is destroyed by
the sequencing procedure\, the dynamics of gene expression must be inferre
d from the structure and geometry of the point cloud. In this talk\, we wi
ll build a biological interpretation of the one-dimensional cohomology cla
sses in hallmark gene subsets as models for biological processes. Such pro
cesses include the cell-cycle\, but more generally model homeostatic negat
ive feedback loops. Our procedure uses persistent cohomology to identify f
eatures\, and integration of differential forms to estimate the cascade of
genes associated with the underlying dynamics of gene expression.\n
