Generalized symmetries\, Noether and Weinberg-Witten</a>\nby Javier Mangan
(UPenn) as part of Symmetry Seminar\n\n\nAbstract\nIn this talk we descri
be new theorems concerning the mixing of symmetries in QFT. In particular\
,\nwe show that generalized symmetries cannot be charged under a continuou
s global symmetry having a Noether\ncurrent. The results follow from a fin
er classification of twist operators\, which naturally extends to\nfinite
group global symmetries. They unravel topological obstructions to the stro
ng version of Noether’s\ntheorem in QFT\, even if under general conditio
ns a global symmetry can be implemented locally by twist\noperators (weak
version). We use these results to rederive Weinberg-Witten’s theorem wit
hin local QFT\,\ngeneralizing it in several directions. We end up discussi
ng the conditions for the strong version to hold\,\ndynamical aspects of Q
FT’s with non-compact generalized symmetries\, scale vs conformal invari
ance in QFT\nand connections with the Coleman-Mandula theorem.\n
