DESCRIPTION:Title:
Knot Invariants in Relation to Statistical Mechanics and Quantum Field The
ory\nby Louis Kaufmann (UI Chicago) as part of Göttingen Colloquium o
f the Research Traininig Group "Fourier Analysis and Spectral Theory"\n\n\
nAbstract\nThis talk will explain a construction due to the speaker (the b
racket polynomial) that is a state summation model for the Jones polynomia
l. This state summation is part of a larger structure that includes the Po
tts model in statistical mechanics and it has a quantum field theoretic in
terpretation via the functional integral approach of Edward Witten. We wil
l explain the basics of these relationships without any prior knowledge re
quired of these areas of mathematics and physics.\n
