DESCRIPTION:Title: <a href="https://researchseminars.org/talk/OWOS/45/">Wa
sserstein Distance to Independence Models</a>\nby Bernd Sturmfels (MPI Lei
pzig) as part of One World Optimization seminar\n\n\nAbstract\nAn independ
ence model for discrete random variables is a variety in a probability sim
plex. \nGiven any data distribution\, we seek to minimize the Wasserstein
distance to the model.\nThat distance comes from a polyhedral norm whose u
nit ball is dual to an alcoved polytope.\nThe solution to our optimization
problem is a piecewise algebraic function of the data.\nIn this talk we d
iscuss the algebraic and geometric structure of this function.\n\nReferenc
e: arXiv:2003.06725\n\nThe address and password of the zoom room of the se
minar are sent by e-mail on the mailinglist of the seminar one day before
 each talk\n
