DESCRIPTION:Title: <a href="https://researchseminars.org/talk/OWOS/17/">Th
 e Era of "Non"-Optimization Problems</a>\nby Jong-Shi Pang (University of
Southern California) as part of One World Optimization seminar\n\n\nAbstra
ct\nThis talk presents a systematic discussion of our comprehensive effort
s in the study of modern “non”-optimization problems from the combined
perspectives of motivation\, theory\, and algorithms. The study is docum
ented in a forthcoming 700-page research monograph with the title: “Mode
rn Nonconvex Nondifferentiable Optimization”\, jointly authored by the s
peaker and Dr. Ying Cui at the University of Minnesota. Beginning with a 1
00-page of prerequisite mathematics and optimization background\, the mono
graph introduces the combined paradigm of structured learning and computat
ional optimization\, with illustrations drawn from contemporary problems i
 n statistical estimation\, operations research\, optimization\, and their
diverse subfields. The goal of this monograph is multi-fold: \na)	place th
e foundational and algorithmic treatment of nonconvexity and nondifferenti
ability on a rigorous footing\, focusing in particular on problems where t
hese two features are coupled\; \nb)	provide the basic concepts and powerf
ul tools of nonsmooth analysis for this purpose\; \nc)	present a host of s
urrogation algorithms with convergence guarantees for computing stationary
solutions of the appropriate kind\; \nd)	understand the roles of these co
mputed solutions in the context of the source problems\, and \ne)	set a fo
rward path for advanced research and to reach out to extended problems suc
h as nonconvex noncooperative games\, nonconvex stochastic programs\, and
robustification of nonconvex problems.\nIn short\, our efforts aim to put
in action the monumental treatise of Rockafellar and Wets on Variational A
nalysis\, open it up for practical applications\, and cement its sustained
contributions in the era of “non”-optimization problems.\n\nthe addre
ss and password of the zoom room of the seminar are sent by e-mail on the
mailinglist of the seminar one day before each talk\n
