  the Navier--Stokes--Fourier system\,\ndescribing the motion of a compress
 ible\, viscous\, and heat conducting\nfluid in a bounded domain $\\Omega \
 \subset R^d$\, $d =2\,3$\, with general\nnon-homogeneous Dirichlet boundar
 y conditions for the absolute\ntemperature. We introduce a new concept of 
 weak solution based on the\nsatisfaction of the entropy inequality togethe
 r with a balance law for\nthe ballistic energy. We show the existence of g
 lobal-in-time weak\nsolutions\, as well as the weak--strong uniqueness pri
 nciple.\n
