DESCRIPTION:Title: <a href="https://researchseminars.org/talk/NSCM/65/">N-
link swimmers swimming alone or in pairs</a>\nby Marta Zoppello (DISMA\, P
olitecnico di Torino) as part of Nečas Seminar on Continuum Mechanics\n\n
\nAbstract\nThis talk presents two models of swimmers immersed in a low Re
ynolds number fluid\,\nboth of them involving the so-called N -link swimme
 r. The first one studies the 3-dimensional N-link swimmer swimming alone [
1]\, the second focuses on two planar 2-link swimmers\nswimming together [
2]. Both models rely on Resistive Force Theory\, which is a good approxima
tion of hydrodynamic forces at low Reynolds number for slender swimmers an
d allows us to cast the equations of motion as ODEs. These equations can b
e seen as control systems\nwhere the controls are the velocity of deformat
ion of the swimmers.\nWe prove that the 3 dimensional N -link swimmer is f
ully controllable and we show the existence of optimal controls for some c
ost functionals. Regarding the coupled swimmers\, even\nif\, taken singula
rly\, they are non-controllable units (because of Purcell’s celebrated S
callop Theorem)\, we prove that taking into account the hydrodynamic inter
action they can achieve a net motion after a periodic sequence of shape ch
anges. Moreover\, under suitable\napproximations\, we are able to optimize
  the displacement.\n\n\n[1] R. Marchello\, M\, Morandotti\, H. Shum\, M. Z
