DESCRIPTION:Title: <a href="https://researchseminars.org/talk/NSCM/207/">T
he behavior of an almost-minimizer of the relative perimeter near a bounda
ry vertex of the container.</a>\nby Giacomo Vianello (Institute of Informa
tion Theory and Automation\, CAS) as part of Nečas Seminar on Continuum M
echanics\n\nLecture held in Room K3\, Faculty of Mathematics and Physics\
 , Charles University\, Sokolovská 83 Prague 8..\n\nAbstract\nIt is known
that the boundary of an almost-minimizer of the relative perimeter inside
a smooth container satisfies Young's Law\, namely\, it meets the containe
r boundary orthogonally. Much less is known when the container is nonsmoot
 h. In this talk\, I will describe some recent results concerning the behav
ior of an almost-minimizer of the relative perimeter near an isolated sing
ularity (vertex) of its container boundary. I will show that\, in dimensio
 n three\, a phenomenon we call vertex-skipping occurs\, that is\, the boun
dary of an almost-minimizer cannot pass through a vertex of its container\
, while in higher dimensions the situation is more intricate\, and a relat
ion between the "aperture" of the vertex and the avoidance of the singular
ity emerges. I will conclude by discussing some related open questions. Th
is is part of a joint project with Gian Paolo Leonardi (University of Tren
 to).\n
