DESCRIPTION:Title: <a href="https://researchseminars.org/talk/NSCM/184/">Q
uasistatic growth of cavities and cracks in the plane</a>\nby Marco Bresci
ani (University of Erlangen and JKU Linz) as part of Nečas Seminar on Con
tinuum Mechanics\n\nLecture held in Room K3\, Faculty of Mathematics and
 Physics\, Charles University\, Sokolovská 83 Prague 8..\n\nAbstract\nWe
propose a model for the quasistatic growth of cavities and cracks in two-d
imensional nonlinear elasticity. Cavities and cracks are modeled as discre
te and compact subsets of a planar domain\, respectively\, and deformation
s are defined only outside of cracks. The model accounts for the irreversi
bility of both processes of cavitation and fracture\, and it allows for th
e coalescence of cavities into cracks. Our main result shows the existence
of quasistatic evolutions in the case of a finite number of cavities unde
r an a priori bound on the number of connected crack components. This is j
oint work with Manuel Friedrich (JKU Linz).\n
