  dynamics of a rail\nrepresented by a straight elastic or elastoplastic be
 am in contact with\nthe foundation and subject to a moving load. The found
 ation consists of\na granular material which undergoes irreversible struct
 ural changes such\nas grain degradation and decreasing void ratio. The the
 ory of non-convex\nsweeping processes makes it possible to evaluate the en
 ergy exchange\nbetween the rail and the foundation\, and to exploit the en
 ergy balance\nequation to prove existence and uniqueness of solutions to t
 he full\nsystem consisting of a fourth order PDE coupled with a variationa
 l\ninequality with a non-convex state-dependent constraint.\n
