 We propose a model for fluid diffusion in partially saturated porous media
  taking\ninto account saturation-dependent permeability as well as hystere
 sis effects in the pressure saturation relation. The resulting mathematica
 l problem leads to a diffusion equation for\nthe pressure in an N-dimensio
 nal domain with a Preisach hysteresis operator under the time\nderivative 
 and in the diffusion coefficient. The problem is doubly degenerate in the 
 sense\nthat the saturation range is bounded\, and no a priori control of t
 he time derivative of the\npressure is available. We discuss the condition
 s for existence and uniqueness of a solution\nto the problem with or witho
 ut gravity effects in appropriate function spaces\, as well as the\nquesti
 on of bounded speed of propagation. This is a joint work with Chiara Gavio
 li.\n
