 heories of nonlinear electrodynamics (NLED) are the self-dual ones\,\nthat
  is\, theories invariant under electromagnetic duality. A well-known examp
 le is Born-Infeld theory. Until recently\, only a few other examples were 
 known. A new formulation leads to the explicit construction of the most ge
 neral self-dual nonlinear electrodynamics and leads to the complete soluti
 on of the causality constraints. In addition\, the construction exhibits i
 n a simple way the connection between causality and energy conditions. A c
 orollary is that there are no regular black holes in any causal NLED with 
 zero cosmological constant.\n
