 major goal of the Langlands program is to describe the\nmultiplicity of an
  irreducible discrete automorphic representation of a\nconnected reductive
  group G in its discrete L2-spectrum. The first goal of\nthis talk is to e
 xplain work from the last few years which gives the first\nconjectural for
 mula for this multiplicity for general G over a global\nfield\, as envisio
 ned by Kottwitz in 1984. We then discuss recent work\nwhich we hope lays t
 he foundations for proving cases of these formulas\nusing the geometric fr
 amework of Fargues and Scholze.\n
