DESCRIPTION:Title: <a href="https://researchseminars.org/talk/GIMs/3/">Fro
m Pattern Formation to Social Distancing: Emergent Dynamics from Collectiv
e Motion</a>\nby Nicholas Russel (University of Delaware) as part of Gradu
ate Inter-University Math seminar\n\n\nAbstract\nSeveral types of organism
s utilize an array of techniques to communicate with one another\, either
explicitly or implicitly. This communication often produces some form of c
ollective behavior\, whereby a group of these organisms form patterns\, pr
oduce a consensus\, and/or move synchronously with each other. There is gr
eat interest from scientists in finding and understanding the underlying m
echanisms governing these types of collective behavior. These mechanisms u
sually take place in the microscale\, on an individual level\, and lead to
macroscopic effects. In this talk\, I will highlight our recent efforts i
n modeling the movement and pattern formation of phytoplankton and the cur
ious social distancing behaviors seen in simple flocks.\n
