DESCRIPTION:Title: <a href="https://researchseminars.org/talk/GEOTOP-A/134
/">Tree polynomial encoding of structural data in life sciences</a>\nby Pe
ngyu Liu (University of Rhode Island) as part of GEOTOP-A seminar\n\n\nAbs
tract\nAdvancements in sequencing technologies have produced a wealth of g
enomic data. Through recent methods enabled by the development of artifici
al intelligence\, these data can be converted\, for example\, into phyloge
nies that reflect evolutionary history\, or into molecular structures that
reveal biological functions and properties. While analyzing the resulting
structural data can advance biological research by providing novel approa
ches and insights\, a major challenge is the lack of efficient and accurat
e structure encodings. In this talk\, we introduce an encoding technique f
rom topological combinatorics that represents tree structures by a series
of graph polynomials. We show that these tree-distinguishing polynomials e
nable efficient\, accurate and interpretable structure analysis using mode
rn data analytics tools. We demonstrate their applications in comparing ph
ylogenies and extracting evolutionary information\, as well as predicting
and understanding the formation of pathogenic nucleic acid structures.\n
