DESCRIPTION:Title: <a href="https://researchseminars.org/talk/FCNTS/7/">Au
tomorphism groups of Riemann surfaces</a>\nby Jen Paulhus (Mount Holyoke C
ollege) as part of Pioneer Valley Number Theory Seminar\n\nLecture held in
  Seeley Mudd 207 @Amherst College.\n\nAbstract\nClassification questions a
bout automorphisms of compact Riemann surfaces date back to the 1800s. The
re has been renewed interest in these questions over the last 30 years as
advances in computation have provided new ways to explore the area. We wil
l talk about some of those advancements focusing on groups which are autom
orphisms in just about every genus they should be (particularly simple gro
ups and the alternating groups $A_n$). We also make a connection to non-no
rmal subvarieties in the singular locus $\\mathcal{M}_g$.\n
