DESCRIPTION:Title: <a href="https://researchseminars.org/talk/FCNTS/42/">A
rithmetic of differential equations</a>\nby Daniel Litt (University of Tor
onto) as part of Five College Number Theory Seminar\n\nLecture held in See
 ley Mudd 207 @Amherst College.\n\nAbstract\nIn 1875 Fuchs asked for a crit
erion that determines when the solutions to an algebraic differential equa
tion are themselves algebraic functions. Conjectural answers to this quest
ion have been given by Grothendieck and Katz\, Ekedahl--Shepherd-Barron--T
aylor\, and Bost\, in terms of the arithmetic of the differential equation
's structure constants. I'll explain joint work in progress with Joshua La
m verifying these conjectures for a class of non-linear differential equat
ions arising in algebraic geometry. This work is largely an excuse to try
to better understand the arithmetic and geometry of algebraic differential
equations and representations of fundamental groups of algebraic varietie
 s.\n
