DESCRIPTION:Title: <a href="https://researchseminars.org/talk/ESME/73/">cr
itstats: Reimagining introductory statistics using a critical quantitative
approach</a>\nby Nathan Alexander (Howard University) as part of Online S
eminar On Undergraduate Mathematics Education\n\nInteractive livestream: h
 ttps://cornell.zoom.us/j/92415199317\n\nAbstract\nI describe a modern appr
oach to teaching introductory statistics that leverages logic\, theory\, a
nd computational methods to engage students in critical quantitative analy
sis. I explore how integrating open-source software tools into this curric
ulum enables learners to participate in an interdisciplinary process of kn
owledge construction: defining terms and propositions and applying statist
ical concepts to social issues. This approach can strengthen both technica
l proficiency and critical thinking. I then discuss the structure of a rel
ated package\, critstats\, which informs a community model and framework f
or developing informational data systems through which users can examine n
 iche histories\, issues\, and challenges.\n
