 ction\, based on recent joint work with E. Jespers\, T. Letourmy\, M. Trom
 betti and A. Van Antwerpen\, of free objects in the category of right nilp
 otent skew braces of bounded class. Although the existence of these free o
 bjects follows from general results in universal algebra\, their explicit 
 construction is much less straightforward. We will describe the main ideas
  behind the construction and some structural properties of the resulting s
 kew braces. We will also introduce the corresponding class of right nilpot
 ent solutions of the Yang--Baxter equation.\n
