 ibes an attempt to amend a scheme originallyproposed by M. Gell-Mann to id
 entify the spin-1/2 fermions of N=8supergravity with the quarks and lepton
 s of the Standard Model. This proposal relies in an essential way on embed
 ding the SU(8) R symmetryinto the infinite-dimensional `maximal compact' s
 ubgroup K(E10) of the conjectured duality symmetry E10. I will also mentio
 n more recentwork exploring the possible role and significance of the eigh
 t massive gravitinos in astrophysics.\n
