 ems in dissipative spatially extended systems. I will focus on simple\, so
 metimes universal models such as the complex Ginzburg-Landau\, the Swift-H
 ohenberg\, and extended KPP equations and attempts to describe their dynam
 ics based on coherent structures. I will present "conceptual' analytical r
 esults\, and describe gaps that rigorous computations may be able to close
 . Topics include invasion fronts\, defects in one- and two-dimensional osc
 illatory media\, and point defects in striped phases.\n
