DESCRIPTION:Title: Co
mbinatorics of lattice polytopes and MMP\nby Victor Batyrev (Universit
ät Tübingen) as part of Copenhagen-Jerusalem Combinatorics Seminar\n\n\n
Abstract\nThe Minimal Model Program (MMP) was born in 80-ties from attempt
s to extend classical results on the birational classification of algebra
ic surfaces to algebraic varieties of dimension >2. The problem of birat
ional classification of higher dimensional algebraic varieties is so dif
ficult that its complete solution is not even expected. However\, a signi
ficant progress in understanding this \nproblem can be achieved if one re
stricts attention to some special and simultaneously sufficiently rich cl
ass of algebraic varieties under consideration.\n\nThe talk suggests to lo
ok at the class of algebraic varieties that are birational to non-degenera
te hypersurfaces Z in an algebraic torus T. It turns out that this class
is sufficiently rich to illustrate \nmany important ideas of MMP using c
ombinatorial properties of the Newton polytope P of the defining equation
of Z. The purpose of the talk is to explain the interplay between the com
binatorics of lattice polytopes and MMP which benefits from studing its
“combinatorial shadows”.\n
