 r the planar N-centre problem\, with homogeneous potentials of negative de
 gree\, possibly anisotropic. We prove the existence of infinitely many col
 lisions-free periodic solutions with negative and small energy\, for any d
 istribution of the centres inside a compact set. The proof is based upon t
 opological\, variational and geometric arguments. The existence result all
 ows to characterize the associated dynamical system with a symbolic dynami
 cs\, where the symbols are the partitions of the N centres in two non-empt
 y sets.\n
