DESCRIPTION:Title: <a href="https://researchseminars.org/talk/BMD2020/1/">
Diffusion of finite-size particles and application to heterogeneous domain
s</a>\nby Maria Bruna (University of Cambridge) as part of Barcelona Mathe
matical Days 2020\n\nLecture held in "Edifici de l'Institut d'Estudis Cata
 lans (IEC)". Carrer del Carme\, 47. Barcelona - Catalunya.\n\nAbstract\nIn
this talk\, I will discuss nonlinear Fokker-Planck models describing diff
usion processes with particle interactions. These models are motivated by
the study of many-particle systems in biology and arise as the population-
level description of a stochastic particle-based model. While mean-field a
pproximations are valid for long-range interactions\, here I will show how
to tackle the case of short-range interactions such as finite-size or exc
luded-volume effects.\nIn the second part of the talk\, I will discuss how
this method can be used to derive an effective transport equation in hete
rogeneous domains\, such as porous media or crowded environments. A nice f
eature of this approach is that it can easily account for macroscopic grad
ients in porosity or crowding. I will compare this with an alternative hom
ogenisation method for periodic porous media and show an industrial applic
 ation concerning filters.\n
