DESCRIPTION:Title: <a href="https://researchseminars.org/talk/BC-MIT/38/">
The arithmetic of differential equations</a>\nby Daniel Litt (University o
f Toronto) as part of BC-MIT number theory seminar\n\nLecture held in Malo
ney 560 at Boston College.\n\nAbstract\nIn 1875 Fuchs asked for a criterio
n that determines when the\nsolutions to an algebraic differential equatio
n are themselves\nalgebraic functions. Conjectural answers to this questio
 n have been\ngiven by Grothendieck and Katz\, Ekedahl--Shepherd-Barron--Ta
ylor\, and\nBost\, in terms of the arithmetic of the differential equation
's\nstructure constants. I'll explain joint work in progress with Joshua\n
Lam verifying these conjectures for a class of non-linear differential\neq
uations arising in algebraic geometry. This work is largely an\nexcuse to
try to better understand the arithmetic and geometry of\nalgebraic differe
ntial equations and representations of fundamental\ngroups of algebraic va
 rieties.\n
