DESCRIPTION:Title: <a href="https://researchseminars.org/talk/AAIT/35/">Re
visiting the optimality of word lengths.</a>\nby Tiago Pimentel (ETH Zuric
 h) as part of Seminar on Algorithmic Aspects of Information Theory\n\n\nAb
stract\nZipf posited that wordforms are optimized to minimize utterances'
communicative costs. He supported this claim by showing that words' length
s are inversely correlated with their frequencies. This correlation\, howe
ver\, is only expected if one assumes that a words' communicative cost is
given by its length. In this talk\, we will explore this assumption\, comp
aring the predictive power over word lengths we get when assuming differen
 t operationalisations of communicative cost.\n
