DESCRIPTION:Title: <a href="https://researchseminars.org/talk/Pomona47Lect
 ure/1/">X+Y: A Mathematician's Manifesto for Rethinking Gender</a>\nby Eug
enia Cheng (School of the Art Institute of Chicago) as part of 47 Lecture\
n\nLecture held in Room 1051 in Estella Labs at Pomona College.\n\nAbstrac
t\nThe Department of Mathematics and Statistics is pleased to announce the
inaugural 47 Lecture. Eugenia Cheng\, Scientist in Residence at the Schoo
l of the Art Institute of Chicago\, will give a talk titled "X+Y: A Mathem
atician's Manifesto for Rethinking Gender." \n\nABSTRACT:\n\nThe question
of why women and minorities are under-represented in mathematics is comple
x and there are no simple answers\, only many contributing factors. I will
draw on a combination of precise mathematical reasoning\, techniques of a
bstract mathematical thinking\, and my experiences as a woman in the male-
dominated field of mathematics.I will argue that if we focus character tra
its rather than gender we can have a more productive and less divisive con
versation\, about math and beyond. \nI will present a new theory for doing
so\, showing that we can use abstract mathematical thinking to work towar
ds a more inclusive society in this politically divisive era. \n\nI will
present the abstract field of Category Theory as a particularly inclusive
subject area according to the dimensions of my new theory\, and demonstrat
e its scope for deepening the curiosity and social awareness of high schoo
l students\, rather than just pushing and evaluating them. This goes again
st the assumption that abstract mathematics can only be taught to high lev
el undergraduates and graduate students\, and the accusation that abstract
mathematics is removed from real life. No prior knowledge will be needed.
\n\nSPEAKER BIO:\n\nProfessor Cheng earned her doctorate in pure math from
Cambridge and won tenure at the University of Sheffield\, UK. She is a Sc
ientist in Residence at the School of the Art Institute in Chicago and is
an early pioneer of maths on YouTube\, with videos that have over 20 milli
on views. Her popular math book How to Bake Pi was featured on the Late Sh
ow with Stephen Colbert.\n\nBeyond Infinity was shortlisted for the Royal
Society Science Book Prize 2017. Professor Cheng writes the Everyday Math
column for Wall Street Journal and is a commissioned composer for GRAMMY-n
ominated soprano Laura Strickling. She also wrote "The Art of Logic\, X +
 Y: A Mathematician's Manifesto for Re-thinking Gender"\, and two children'
s books. Her next book\, "The Joy of Abstraction"\, is out in October 2022
and Is Math Real? in 2023.\n
