DESCRIPTION:Title: <a href="https://researchseminars.org/talk/ITS-ChaosAnd
 QFT/1/">Herding Cats: A Chaotic Field Theory</a>\nby Predrag Cvitanovic (G
eorgia Tech) as part of ITS Symposium: Chaos and Quantum Field Theory\n\n\
 nAbstract\nSuppose you find yourself face-to-face with Yang-Mills or\nNavi
er-Stokes or a nonlinear PDE or a funky metamaterial or a\ncloudy day. And
you ask yourself\, is this thing "turbulent"? What\ndoes that even mean?\
n\nIf you were ever taught 'chaos'\, you must have learned about the\ncoin
toss (Bernoulli map). I'll walk you through this basic example\nof determ
inistic chaos\, than through the 'kicked rotor'\, a neat\nphysical system
that is chaotic\, and then put infinity of\nthese together to explain wha
 t `chaos' or `turbulence' looks like\nin the spacetime.\n\nWhat emerges is
a spacetime which is very much like a big spring\nmattress that obeys the
familiar continuum versions of a harmonic\noscillator\, the Helmholtz and
  Poisson equations\, but instead of\nbeing "springy"\, this metamaterial h
as an unstable rotor at every\nlattice site\, that gives\, rather than pus
hes back. We call this\nsimplest of all chaotic field theories the `spatio
temporal cat'.\nThat's `turbulence'. And if you don't know\, now you know.
\n\nNo actual cats\, graduate or undergraduate\, have shown interest in\,\
nor were harmed during this research.\n
