DESCRIPTION:Title: <a href="https://researchseminars.org/talk/HeilbronnVVP
/1/">Approximate groups</a>\nby Emmanuel Breuillard (University of Cambrid
ge) as part of Heilbronn Virtual Visiting Professors 2021\n\n\nAbstract\nS
ymmetry is one of the most fundamental concepts of science and mathematics
. Group theory is the field of mathematics devoted to its study. In this l
ecture we will discuss various situations where symmetry is present only p
artially and where a notion approximate symmetry arises naturally. In grou
p theory this leads to the notion of approximate group\, which has been mu
ch studied in the last twenty years in connection with various fields incl
uding additive combinatorics\, harmonic and fractal analysis\, asymptotic
finite group theory\, geometric group theory\, ergodic theory and even log
ic and model theory. The lecture will introduce this concept and present s
 ome recent developments.\n
